The Jamil Shriners: Fun, Faith & Fellowship

The Jamil Shriners: Fun, Faith & Fellowship

Chapin’s Labor Day Parade was the perfect send off to summer, and this year was no different. The Shriners have been a part of the parade for many years, consistently bringing joy to children’s faces whether by motorcade, clowns, the circus, or a not-so-simple ride to the hospital. We sat down with Shriners from the Jamil Shrine Center to learn more about what they do and why they do it.

Who are the Shriners?

[Shriner, Russell Taylor:] We are everyday people who drive funny cars and wear funny hats... Seriously though, we focus on charitable efforts, most notably through our network of 22 non-profit Shriners Children’s [Hospitals] that provide specialized pediatric care regardless of a family’s ability to pay. We also support local communities and raise awareness about their charitable causes, and engage in social and recreational activities to promote camaraderie and fellowship amongst our members. We combine Fun, Fellowship, and Philanthropy to make a positive impact on both local and global scales.

What’s the difference between the Masons and the Shriners?

Shriners are particularly known for our network of Shriners Children’s, while Masonic lodges engage in a variety of local and national charitable activities. Shriners provide an avenue for Master Masons to engage in more social and family-oriented activities. The Shriners’ events often include parades, social gatherings, and family-friendly activities, which complement the more solemn and formal rituals of Freemasonry.

What kinds of things do you do to raise money?

There are Shriners circuses, parades, social events, golf tournaments and sporting events. These events attract participants and sponsors, with proceeds going to various Shriners’ causes.

What do you do with the money you raise?

The largest portion of funds goes to supporting Shriners Children’s which provides specialized pediatric care, and are involved in cutting edge research and the development of advanced treatment options.

A portion of our funds provide support to the operations of local chapters, such as Jamil Shrine Center, which allows us to provide transportation and support to patients in our community and promote the charitable activities of our fraternity.

What special interest units are there?

Jamil Shrine Center is comprised of several special interest units. Motorized units are the most familiar, participating in parades, charity rides, and other events. These units include the clowns, who are active in the Shriners Circus held at Jamil Shrine Center in February, and the various groups you see parading on motorcycles or riding little cars. There are also common interest units for other activities such as hospital relations, community ambassadors and even shooting sports.

With respect, I understand that you have an all-male membership. Is that outdated? What about women?

Ladies are involved in virtually all of our events. Shriners International is traditionally a men’s fraternity, and membership is limited to Master Masons. However, there are associated organizations for women, which support and work alongside Shriners in their charitable and social activities. One of the Ladies’ groups is the Daughters of the Nile who also support Shriners Children’s.

What are the requirements to become a Shriner?

To become a Shriner, one must be a Master Mason in good standing with their local Masonic Lodge.

Ever since I read The DaVinci Code, Shriners and Masons have held a bit of mystery. What’s with all the secrecy?

Freemasonry is known for its secretive nature, which has led to much curiosity and speculation. Freemasonry has a rich tradition of rituals and ceremonies that are meant to be experienced in a particular way by its members. Secrecy helps preserve the impact and integrity of these rituals. Freemasonry is less a secret organization than it is an organization with some secrets – not unlike most fraternal organizations.

What is the most important thing for people to remember about the Shriners?

Our organization emphasizes Fun, Fellowship, and Philanthropy. We are dedicated to serving others, upholding high moral standards, and fostering a sense of brotherhood among our members and the community.

How can people get involved?

Certainly we welcome new members, donations, and participation at our events. Most events are open to the public and we encourage you to join us. Upcoming events include:

BBQ Cook-Off (September 13-14)

Oyster Roast (October 26)

Jamil Shriners Circus (February 6-9)

Inaugural Jamil Shriners Sporting Clays Benefit (March of 2025)

Information on these and other events can be found at jamilshrinecenter.com or by calling 803-772-9830.
